The Christmas Job Search

December is a busy time for us all, as we get ready for the Christmas period and prepare for the looming New Year. So who has the time to look for a job now? Many of you will think that the festive period is the worst time to job hunt, but you could not be more wrong! With most people taking the time off work during the Holidays, things will be a lot quieter around the office. Competition decreases, companies will respond quicker, hiring managers are more likely to be available for interviews and recruitment consultants are starved of good candidates to work with. So how can you use this valuable time effectively and positively to find work?

Less competition: How many times have you heard people say “I’m going to wait to look for a job until after Christmas?” This is because most people stop jobhunting during the Christmas period. Therefore, if you are looking for a job during this time, then you have already narrowed down your competition! So whilst everyone else might be sitting around, eating, travelling and Xmas shopping; this might be your best opportunity to land a job and get yourself out there to potential employers!

Get your CV out there: With less competition, this means fewer candidates to work with. So it is important for you to update your CV (and even your LinkedIn profile) and get it out there! Recruitment consultants are still hard at work looking for the right candidates to work with during this time of the year. Send in your CV, give them a call, find them on LinkedIn; you may find them to be more receptive than normal!

Do it now: You may think that if you apply now, you probably won’t hear back until January 2014. However, this is not the case! If a recruiter posts a job ad, then the position needs to be filled – usually sooner rather than later! So if they think you are the best candidate for the role, why would they wait to contact you? Most people work up until Christmas Eve anyway!  You may even end up with an interview and a job offer before Christmas…now that would be a nice present to yourself right?

Be positive: Although it may be difficult and frustrating when you are out of work and money is tight during this time of year, it is important to remain positive, focused and motivated… no matter what! Take this time to refresh both your mind and your plan to find work and review your CV, goals and objectives.
