When designers first began collaborating with high-street brands, bringing the gap between both ends of fashion design together, there was little excitement and limited media coverage surrounding it. Now with all number of luxury designers working together with high-street stores to produce exclusive pieces it seems there’s no collaboration too impossible.

Over the past few years we’ve seen luxury brands from Versace to Christopher Kane mingle with the high-street, designing for major fashion giants such as H&M and Topshop. With the growing world of social media contributing to the widely spread coverage of each pair-up, the success of the collaborations has continued to grow. Mary Kantrantzou for Topshop, Giles Deacon for New Look and Jimmy Choo for H&M are just some of the previous labels that have basked in the huge success of their collaborations and JW Anderson’s current Fall 2012 collection for Topshop is proving to be one of the most successful yet with a huge 99 pieces.

One future collaboration that has got the CVUK team in a flap is the forthcoming William Tempest for River Island’s Design Forum, which is set to launch in-store and online this October.  Announced back in July this year, the 13 piece collection takes its inspiration from the 1920s and Ancient Egypt, consisting of clothing and accessories which include tasselled flapper dresses, embellished shirts and more than enough lashings of leather. The collection was unveiled during London Fashion Week through a short film titled ‘It Will Not Always Be Summer’, as part of the FASH/ON Film Festival in conjunction with the British Fashion Council.

Aimed at providing the average retail consumer with an affordable alternative while maintaining the designer label, the level of success for these business ventures is not surprising and with designers finding new and exciting ways to promote their work, there remains plenty of scope for the success to continue. River Island’s only other collaboration with celebrity favourite designer Julian J Smith was in such high demand orders were placed before it hit the stores, and with the hype surrounding William Tempest’s crack at the high-street the future collaboration is set to be a roaring success.
